As we travel, move for careers, or simply just place a step outside the door, we encounter individuals from all walks of life. Yesterday, I was speaking to a girlfriend who is trying to get back into the dating scene and meet new people in efforts to expand her social circle after hibernating for a while. (Hey, rightfully so!) As she was asking me for some advice, I thought back to two years ago when I was pursuing a similar mission. At that time, I had become a closed off person to any newcomers because of several betrayals that had previously occurred in my social life. To me, I was protecting myself from further hurt. In reality, I had set up bolted gates to prevent anything new or positive from entering. As time had passed, I’m sure there were about 20 gates or so….haha. I was stuck in a serious rut and lounging in my misery. What has changed since then?
I started to say YES. To everything. Even if, initially, the idea sounded unappealing to me or quite frankly I rather would have gone on a date with my Netflix. So, I began saying yes to camping, to dive bars, yoga class…you name it. When you say yes, you are bound to be surprised eventually. You discover things you like that you had no concept of before and most importantly, you grow. The tiny box I was residing in had been opened from all four walls and I felt unstoppable. It became a sort of adrenaline rush where each day was unpredictable as well as the possibilities of who I might come across or what activity I might take up. This fearless transformation abandons the comfort zone we hinder ourselves with on a daily basis.
As I did this, I inevitably also made new friendships. When I reflect, I think about the qualities that attract me to people whether it is a friend or potential prospect. One seemed to always overpower the others and it was very simple. The most intriguing, beautiful, and magnetic trait a person can possess is a thirst for life. This is the person that truly enjoys and loves life as well as themselves, while injecting energy into every moment. They are adaptable people and can interact with a variety of people in a plethora of settings. When you depart after spending time with them, you have absorbed the warmth they radiated and in turn, it makes you happier as well. Why wouldn’t you be attracted to something that makes you happy?! You can tell these people have an extra pep in their step: they are believers and doers, chasing dreams, and singing during the ride.
I wanted to write this post because it could not fit more seamlessly with #PositivityFilter. Positive, open, happy people are the definition of magnetically attractive to me. Surrounding yourself with this kind of energy drives you and revives you.
Therefore, I end with this: open those gates, shake off the dust, and say YES.
As always, thanks for reading.
