As I answered my phone, I heard a cheery and bright voice on the other end and it was as if I could feel the LA heat on my skin and the sand in my toes. Readers, meet Allison Kehoe, our third feature in the series Positivity In The Workplace.
Allison is a 25 year old currently living in Los Angeles while working with Nielsen, the world’s largest market research company. So, what does the red carpet have to do with this?! I had the same thought as you when I happened to be scrolling down my FB feed and noticed Allison dazzling on a glamorous night. So, after some dedicated creeping, I happened to find out she was also a beauty blogger. I was intrigued nonetheless, and therefore, decided to reach out to her after about 8 years of being out of touch. (We attended the same high school…gotta love good old Carmel, Indiana.) She enthusiastically agreed to me interviewing her and getting to know her story… and that brings us to where we are now.
Me: So, let’s start from the beginning.
Allison: Yes, so, I was recruited out of Indiana University to work with Nielsen in LA. After graduation, I packed my bags and started the new chapter of my life here in California working as a Marketing Consultant with them. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Nestle and did things like analyzing advertising campaigns, determining if we were in the right stores, etc. Now, I have transitioned into the Entertainment realm where I examine and analyze TV and digital ads–which is something I am very passionate about.
Me: How did this blogging business come about?
Allison: Well, when I moved out here to work for Nielsen, it took time to get settled in my job and eventually I fell into a routine. I was enjoying my career and spending time with friends on the weekends, however, there was definitely a void that I wanted to fill. So, blogging began as a hobby and creative outlet for me. As for the beauty aspect of things, I was never a huge make-up person. (This is also where we both chuckled because images of high school were coming back to us.) In my free time, I had a growing fascination with the boundless amount of YouTube beauty videos as well as experimenting with products on my own. Beauty trends change at an incredibly fast pace too which is the aspect I love about it! My friends would also approach me asking for my beauty opinions/suggestions and it dawned me that I actually have a voice. So, I started the blog in October 2013. Since then, I have been lucky to contribute to Lucky Magazine, attend the Golden Globe awards, as well as work with Vanity Fair.
Me: And what is the blog called?
Allison: Weezywee (www.weezywee.com) It’s the name Hannah (our mutual friend from high school) gave me and just kind of stuck. Sometimes, I just like to think of it as my alter ego. I figured it’s fun, quirky, and something people tend to remember.
Me: (Laughs out loud) I love it! And, I do remember that. So, tell me, where do you hope Weezywee to go?
Allison: I started this blog as something personal and while it did begin as a beauty blog initially, it has evolved over time. When I checked out my analytics, I realized the most traffic I was receiving was from family and friends back in Indiana. Therefore, it would now be a “Beauty & Lifestyle” blog in efforts to keep them in the loop about my life and adventures here in LA. It was never really about the money for me and so I haven’t fathomed about it being something full-time for me. I do wish for more exciting opportunities whether it be events, meeting new people, or gaining first access to new products!
Me: What is something that serves to motivate you on a day-to-day basis?
Allison: Family. Growing up in Indiana, I felt very grounded when I moved to LA. My siblings are my best friends and I feel extremely grateful for that. Not everyone could say the same. They make me want to be the best version of myself and also be there for them. Like, just yesterday, I was helping my sister with her taxes. Sometimes, it’s taxes and sometimes mascara.
Me: Gosh, you’re the whole package aren’t you?!
Allison: And my boyfriend of about 4 years. He’s my support system and we love to do well and make each other proud.
Me: If you had a philosophy or motto of some sort, what would it be?
Allison: Intelligence is the new black. Black suits everyone right?! I take a great deal of pride in being a strong female and think every woman should invest in herself in ways that are most valuable to her. Whether that is making intelligent decisions, devoting yourself to school, or even your belief system.
Me: Last question, if you could give advice to a 20-something what would it be?
Allison: Do not sell yourself short, but be open to opportunities that you may have not considered before. You never know where they will take you. Think of it as a journey, not a destination.
